Artist Statement
My metal performative sculptures are time and process-based. My inspiration comes from dance gestures and telling a story with that movement. The female body as the subject of my work appears distorted to the viewer by the ephemeral qualities of oxidation on metal. I imprint my body onto a sheet of steel with coconut oil and use a torch and vinegar solution to rust the bare steel. My work slowly changes in time and there is a growth that appears on the surface. I find this growth in relation to myself as a young growing artist and woman. The changing quality from the oxidation of metal allows the work to take on its own life. I conceptually reverse the gaze of the viewer through the obscurity of the female body by displaying vulnerability in myself and the material.
